The Flash as the Running Man: Part 1

Description

The challenge for Week 107 of The Line It Is Drawn -- part of the Comics Should Be Good blog on ComicBookResources.com -- is to mash up comic book characters with Stephen King stories. The Twitter suggestion of crossing DC Comics' The Flash with "The Running Man" sounds like an obvious one... and I am not one to do the obvious. So instead of placing the Flash in the middle of the King story, I decided to take the basic premise of the plot of "The Running Man" and reimagine it as if it were a Flash comic book story. From there, I would create a mock comic book cover (which seems to be my signature motif for the Line) for that story.

After sketching out some thumbnails on a dozen or so Post-it notes, there were two strong concepts that I had a hard time narrowing down to one frontrunner. I figured I'd just keep developing both in tandem until I can decide which idea to submit. I did eventually decide on one, but I had come so far on the other that it seemed like a waste to not include it somehow.

This is the... ahem... runner-up concept. And I must admit I was surprised with how finished this rough sketch looked once I cleaned it up, filled in the blacks and colors, and added the logos and trade dress. Those Hunters have a very familiar (read: stolen) design, which may give you a hint as to the identity of the mastermind of "G-Net." To see how I incorporated this concept into the final submission (in a callback to 1980s DC Comics), visit the site here:
